A group known as the “Blade Runners” is vandalising traffic sensors fitted above lights, believing they are surveillance devices or “electronic assault weapons” capable of causing serious illness. Attacks have led to arrests and police investigations across England, highlighting how conspiracy theories about technology and state control can translate into public danger and criminal damage.

The devices generally detect vehicle and pedestrian numbers, queue lengths and traffic flow, rather than recording faces, number plates or personal information. Nearly 200 units were damaged in Cambridge, 10 were vandalised in Sleaford within a week, and a County Durham pensioner is facing trial over alleged damage at eight junctions; transport and pedestrian-safety experts say the sensors have been used since the 1970s and can improve traffic management and road safety.
