## Key points

- Marshall accused Hamilton of grooming children.
- Polls show Hamilton narrowly ahead in Kansas.
- Trump has joined Marshall’s campaign effort.

## Summary

Kansas Senator Roger Marshall has drawn backlash after accusing his Democratic challenger, Adam Hamilton, of “probably grooming children”, citing Hamilton’s past support for LGBTQ issues and drag shows. The allegation comes as polls put Hamilton slightly ahead in a state that has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1932, raising the prospect of a rare Republican defeat.

Hamilton’s spokesperson called the claim an “inexplicable smear”; Hamilton has also denied wrongdoing over his church’s handling of a 2005 abuse case involving a volunteer who was later convicted. Marshall’s campaign has used that case in attack adverts, while Hamilton says he was not involved in the investigation. Donald Trump has joined the campaign effort, attacking Hamilton, and planned a Kansas rally that was cancelled and then reinstated, according to the article.
