Keanu Reeves’ “John Wick Meets Die Hard” Action-Thriller Officially Finds a New Streaming Home

Polygon · 11 hours ago

The 1994 action thriller "Speed," starring Keanu Reeves, has found a new streaming home, joining HBO Max's line-up in the US ahead of September 2026. The film, directed by Jan de Bont, is widely regarded as one of the best action films of its decade, notable for translating the "Die Hard" formula onto a city bus rigged to explode if it drops below 50 miles per hour.

Reeves plays LAPD officer Jack Traven, who boards a bus targeted by a bomber played by Dennis Hopper, with Sandra Bullock's character stepping in as driver after the original driver is injured. Critics have long praised the film's tight, easy-to-follow premise, strong chemistry between Reeves and Bullock, and de Bont's direction, drawing on his earlier work as cinematographer on "Die Hard" itself; he went on to direct "Twister" two years later before his career lost momentum.
