Ninety-year-old Ian Winship is believed to have achieved the fastest 10km time recorded by someone in the M90 age category, finishing a community race in Cumbernauld in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 37 seconds. The former paratrooper and steeplejack ran alongside his daughter and grandson, attracting praise for his fitness, determination and community spirit.

Scottish Athletics described the result as a “world best” rather than an official world record because amateur road races are not measured and ratified consistently. Winship, a veteran of the 1956 Suez Crisis, credits daily walks, exercise and social contact for keeping him active; his next goal is to live to 100.
