## Key points

- Fans queued for a major Harry Potter store opening on Oxford Street.
- Pro-trans demonstrators protested JK Rowling’s views outside.
- Visitors and protesters differed over the protest’s purpose and impact.

## Summary

Hundreds of fans queued on Oxford Street for the opening of the UK’s largest Harry Potter-themed shop, where demonstrators also gathered to protest author JK Rowling’s gender-critical views. Some visitors said the protest was intimidating or misplaced outside a shop aimed at families, while others argued that the franchise’s success supports views harmful to transgender people.

The demonstrators used placards, megaphones and chants supporting trans rights, and said they planned to protest throughout the day. Fans interviewed disagreed about whether enjoying Harry Potter could be separated from Rowling’s views; one protester said fans may not realise the impact of supporting the franchise. Actor Warwick Davis attended the store’s Wednesday opening.
