Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has instructed lawyers to challenge Government funding cuts that have forced Tory-run Wandsworth Council to increase council tax by 94 per cent. Badenoch accused Labour of deliberately allocating money away from Conservative-voting areas whilst funding Labour-voting regions, and stated the party would pursue legal action over the principle involved. She described the increases as outrageous and unfair to homeowners penalised for not voting Labour.

The council faces a £137 million budget shortfall inherited from the previous Labour administration, which allegedly used reserves to balance budgets, increased staffing by 14 per cent since 2022, and spent substantially without increasing revenue. Wandsworth residents currently pay £1,020 annually for Band D council tax, with the council's portion set to rise by £958 under the new plans, nearly doubling the total bill to £1,978. A Tory spending review warned that council tax would need to rise by more than 230 per cent to balance the books without intervention.
