Polygon ·

Warner Bros. will release an uncensored 4K restoration of Ken Russell’s 1971 film *The Devils* in cinemas, presenting the film as its director intended. The release matters as the first NC-17-rated film from Warner Bros., issued through its Clockwork imprint, and brings a long-censored work back to the big screen.

The historical horror drama stars Oliver Reed as 17th-century priest Urbain Grandier, accused of witchcraft after the Loudun possessions, and Vanessa Redgrave as Sister Jeanne des Anges. The Devils is a 1971 historical horror film directed by British filmmaker Ken Russell. Set in 17th-century France, it follows Urbain Grandier, a Catholic priest played by Oliver Reed, who is accused of witchcraft after a series of alleged possessions at a convent; Vanessa Redgrave plays Sister Jeanne des Anges.

The film draws on real events in the town of Loudun, where accusations of demonic possession became entangled with religious and political conflict. Its graphic scenes led to cuts and bans in several countries, making censorship part of the film’s history.
