## Key points

- Paul Mackenzie received a 200-year sentence for murdering 191 people.
- Nearly all the victims were children, and most died from starvation.
- Twenty-eight co-accused were also convicted and sentenced.

## Summary

A Kenyan court has sentenced cult leader Paul Mackenzie to 200 years in prison for the murder of 191 people, all but one of them children. The judge found that he directed followers to starve their children so they could “meet Jesus” and bore primary responsibility for the killings.

The term comprises 100 years for homicide and 100 years for offences related to starvation; the two sentences will run consecutively. Mackenzie was convicted alongside 28 others, who received prison terms of up to 160 years. More than 400 bodies were found in shallow graves in Shakahola forest after his arrest in 2023; most victims died of starvation, while others suffered suffocation, strangulation or head injuries. He also faces separate manslaughter and terrorism charges, which he denies.
