British athlete Josh Kerr has broken the men's mile world record, ending a 27-year mark held by Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj, and says he believes he could run even faster in future. The 28-year-old Scot's achievement makes him the first British holder of the record since Steve Cram in 1985, continuing a lineage that includes Roger Bannister, Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett, and comes as a significant moment for British middle-distance running.

Kerr clocked three minutes 42.66 seconds, beating El Guerrouj's 1999 time by nearly half a second and improving substantially on his own previous British record of 3:45.34. He set the mark in front of a sell-out crowd of 60,000 at London Stadium during the city's Diamond League meeting, and said he chose to attempt the record on home soil partly to inspire the next generation of British athletes. Kerr suggested that with more favourable conditions he could potentially lower the time further.
