- Robert Duvall leads a cattle crew facing a Montana rancher.
- The film pairs classic Western themes with character drama.

## Summary

Kevin Costner’s 2003 Western *Open Range* is now available to stream free on Tubi, giving viewers who miss his role in *Yellowstone* another story set in the American West. The film’s restrained style and focus on relationships offer a smaller-scale alternative to Costner’s more ambitious projects.

Robert Duvall plays cattleman “Boss” Spearman, whose group confronts a powerful Montana rancher in a range war; Costner plays his hot-headed apprentice. The article argues that the film’s blend of classic Western themes and character drama anticipated the appeal of modern television Westerns, despite its modest reception on release.
