King Charles, French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Andy Burnham will preview the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum on Wednesday, ahead of its public opening in London on 10 September. The medieval tapestry, originally embroidered in England but held in France for centuries, is on loan until July 2027 in what Macron called a "powerful symbol" of close UK-French ties. The visit also marks the first official joint engagement between King Charles and Burnham since he became prime minister in July.

The 70m tapestry depicts the Norman Conquest and the 1066 Battle of Hastings across 58 scenes featuring hundreds of human and animal figures. French officials say display conditions at the British Museum, where it will lie flat rather than upright, are ideal for preserving its 900-year-old fibres, easing earlier fears about damage during transit. The loan, announced during Macron's July 2025 state visit, will see the UK reciprocate by lending France Anglo-Saxon treasures, while the two leaders are also expected to discuss Ukraine, the Middle East, EU relations and Channel crossings.
