King Charles has sent a personal message of condolence to the victims of the Manchester synagogue terror attack, describing the memory of those affected as remaining "vividly" in his mind. The message was read out at a memorial service held on Monday evening at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Crumpsall, marking the anniversary of the attack in which Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, drove into the synagogue's gates and attacked worshippers with a knife while wearing a fake suicide belt on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

The attack killed Melvin Cravitz, 66, who died from knife wounds, and Adrian Daulby, 53, who suffered a fatal gunshot wound fired by police; three other men were seriously injured but have since been released from hospital. Al-Shamie, a Syrian-born British citizen who was on bail for an alleged rape at the time, was shot dead by police at the scene. The King's message, delivered by Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester Eamonn O'Neal, recalled his own visit to the synagogue shortly after the attack as "deeply moving and heartbreaking", while Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis condemned the attack as a hate crime and paid tribute to the "pious, wonderful lives" of the two men killed.
