Buckingham Palace has announced that Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Thompson, senior equerry to King Charles III and Queen Camilla, is to leave his role at the end of the year, bringing his 22-year British Army career to a close. He intends to move into the private sector, with the King and Queen said to have been aware of his plans in advance and grateful for his support.

Thompson, from Morpeth in Northumberland, joined the Army in 2005 and served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2006, 2009 and 2011 before becoming equerry to Charles and Camilla, then Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, in 2019. He remained at the King's side following the death of Queen Elizabeth II and featured prominently at the Coronation, before being promoted to senior equerry in October 2023, a position that effectively makes him the monarch's right-hand man.
