## Key points

- King Charles confirms Harry and Meghan remain private citizens, not working royals.
- Formal letter sent to over 100 stakeholders, including 98 Lord Lieutenants.
- Move follows rumours of a "half-in, half-out" royal role for the Sussexes.

## Summary

King Charles has moved decisively to end speculation about Prince Harry and Meghan's status following their return to Britain, issuing an unprecedented letter confirming they remain private citizens rather than working royals. The letter, sent to more than 100 senior figures including the UK's 98 Lord Lieutenants, was written by Lord Chamberlain Lord Benyon on the King's instruction and stated plainly that the Sussexes' HRH titles remain in abeyance, with their charitable and commercial work undertaken in a purely private capacity and no public money attached. A former royal press secretary, Ailsa Anderson-Cole, called the move "decisive and unequivocal", noting the King had cleverly taken control of the narrative by responding to stakeholder queries rather than issuing his own statement.

The letter followed briefings from sources close to the couple suggesting Harry had secured a "half-in, half-out" arrangement allowing commercial freedom alongside limited official duties — a model rejected by the late Queen Elizabeth at the 2020 Sandringham Summit that led to the Sussexes' departure from royal life. Its publication coincided with Harry's first public outing since returning to the UK, when he was photographed signing a mural at Tower Bridge Studios, and with Meghan posting her first picture since arriving back, showing her petting a dog in the sunshine.
