Kingdom Hearts almost led to Disney making its own version of Super Smash Bros, former dev says

Kingdom Hearts' success reportedly encouraged Disney to briefly explore developing its own Super Smash Bros-style fighting game, according to former Disney Interactive concept artist Ken Christiansen, who worked on the original Kingdom Hearts. He told Time Extension that Disney had initially been wary of mixing characters from different franchises, having "butted heads" during Kingdom Hearts' development over crossing over worlds such as The Lion King and The Little Mermaid, but the game's strong sales on PlayStation 2 changed the company's attitude towards crossover projects.
This led to pre-production on a title with the working name Disney's Action Figure Face Off, which imagined Disney characters as fighting action figures in a Toy Story-style setup, drawing on franchises including Tarzan, The Lion King and Treasure Planet. The project never advanced beyond prototypes, as Disney chose to prioritise safer film tie-ins instead, though later efforts such as Disney Infinity, Disney Speedstorm and Disney Dreamlight Valley pursued similar crossover concepts. Kingdom Hearts itself remains active, with Kingdom Hearts 4 due late next year alongside a Disney Plus anime adaptation in development.
