## Key points

- Shanahan said cap pressures drove Buckner’s 2020 trade.
- The 49ers have since brought Buckner back.
- San Francisco is 6-1 and a Super Bowl contender.

## Summary

Kyle Shanahan said trading DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts in 2020 was a difficult decision driven by the 49ers’ salary cap plans. His explanation matters now that San Francisco has brought Buckner back, turning the move into a reunion with a team that remains a Super Bowl contender.

Buckner recorded 7.5 sacks in his final season with the 49ers and helped their defence reach Super Bowl 54, where they lost 31-20 to Kansas City. Shanahan said the team needed to pay several young players, including George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and Fred Warner, and judged that keeping one star could prevent them retaining several others. San Francisco is 6-1 this season.
