Kyrgios provisionally suspended after positive cocaine test

BBC Sport · 2 hours ago

Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended from professional tennis after testing positive for cocaine, with the International Tennis Integrity Agency confirming the ban has been in place since 4 August. The Australian, a former world number 13, submitted a sample during the Mallorca Open on 22 June that was found to contain benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine; he has not appealed and issued an apology on Instagram taking "full responsibility" for what he called "a huge mistake". The suspension bars him from playing, coaching at or attending any Grand Slam or tour-sanctioned event, and comes as he continues to grapple with long-term knee and wrist injuries that have limited him to just four singles matches this season.

In his statement, the 31-year-old said years of injury had taken "a huge toll" on him mentally and physically and that he was struggling to come to terms with nearing the end of his career, though he stressed this did not excuse his actions; he plans to step away from social media and public life for 28 days. Cocaine is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, and while reduced sanctions can apply for out-of-competition use, Kyrgios's positive test came during a tournament in which he played singles, losing in the first round. He has long been a divisive figure in tennis, having previously admitted assaulting an ex-partner, faced criticism over misogynistic comments, and reached the 2022 Wimbledon final, where he lost to Novak Djokovic.
