L7 bassist Jennifer Finch has died at the age of 57, just weeks after publicly revealing a brain cancer diagnosis that had prompted fans to raise funds for her medical treatment. The band confirmed her death over the weekend in an emotional social media statement, calling her a "true original" whose "fierce spirit, humor and boundless creativity" helped shape L7, and mourning the loss of their "beloved bandmate, sister and friend."

Finch joined the American punk band in 1987 and remained a key member as L7 skirted the edges of grunge and Riot Grrrl while carving out a distinctive path of their own. She featured in the band's celebrated 1992 Reading Festival set alongside headliners Nirvana, and had been forced to withdraw from the US leg of L7's "Last Hurrah Tour" earlier this year due to illness. Tributes followed her death, including from her old friend Courtney Love.
