Dame Penelope Keith, the actress best known for The Good Life and To The Manor Born, was laid to rest at Guildford Cathedral following a funeral service that friends and mourners described as moving yet joyful. She died peacefully at her home on 29 June, aged 86, after living with cancer, and crowds gathered along the streets of Milford in Surrey, her home town, to watch her coffin pass by before the service.

Broadcaster Gyles Brandreth, who spoke at the funeral, said it combined "sadness but laughter and gratitude" as mourners celebrated a great actress, calling it "a truly beautiful and deeply moving" occasion that perfectly reflected her character. Others who attended, including Sarah Cliff, whose parents were the acting couple Michael Robbins and Hal Dyer, and long-time acquaintance Doreen Walford, praised the service and remembered Dame Penelope as warm, approachable and deeply connected to her local community.
