Sports agent Leigh Steinberg has warned NFL teams that failing to maintain several quarterback options could seriously damage their seasons, amid a series of early injuries. He said teams should ideally retain three quarterbacks because the position is especially vulnerable and losing both the starter and primary backup can leave a side exposed.

Five starting quarterbacks had been injured before Week 3, including New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart, who is expected to miss the rest of the season. Steinberg acknowledged that rising starting-quarterback salaries and the salary cap make quality backups expensive, but argued that injuries can also reduce the NFL’s appeal because quarterbacks are among its most recognisable stars; he supports strong safety measures while preserving competitive play.
