Leigh hold off Castleford to boost play-off hopes
Leigh Leopards held on to beat Castleford Tigers 24-18 in the Betfred Super League, strengthening their bid for a play-off place. The result extended Leigh's fine recent form to nine wins in 11 matches, though it leaves them seventh, still just outside the top six on points difference. For Castleford, who slipped to an 11th-placed fifth defeat in six games, the loss was compounded by frustration over two disallowed tries.
Leigh raced into a 12-0 lead with tries against the run of play from Lachlan Lam and David Armstrong, only for Castleford to level by half-time through Sam Hall and Mikaele Ravalawa, the latter a late call-up as 18th man after Krystian Mapapalangi withdrew injured in the warm-up. Umyla Hanley and a second Armstrong try restored a 12-point cushion after the break, with Phoenix Laulu-Togaga'e's late score setting up a tense finish. Castleford twice had efforts overturned by video review, while Louis Senior was sin-binned for a high tackle; Leigh coach Adrian Lam admitted his side's penalty count was "outrageous" and felt the stop-start nature "ruined" the game.
