Andreas Leknessund won stage seven of the Vuelta a España for his first Grand Tour stage victory, completing a Norwegian one-two ahead of Uno-X Mobility team-mate Tobias Halland Johannessen. The result was particularly emotional because it came on the day Norway’s King Harald V died, with both Norwegian riders wearing black armbands in his memory.

Leknessund attacked his breakaway companions on the final climb of the 149.8km mountainous stage in Aragon and rode the final seven kilometres alone, winning by 34 seconds; Wout van Aert was third, 47 seconds back. Tadej Pogačar finished 19th, 4 minutes 23 seconds down, but gained 16 seconds on his main overall rivals to extend his general-classification lead; Britain’s Oscar Onley moved up to sixth overall and now leads the young rider classification by nearly four minutes.
