LG has agreed to disable McAfee advertising pop-ups delivered through its monitor software after complaints from Windows 11 users and intervention by Microsoft. The episode matters because some LG monitors reportedly installed software without clear user permission via Windows Update, raising concerns about unwanted advertising, user control and potential security risks.

Users said newer LG monitors, including some models from 2024, added the “LG Monitor App Installer” when connected to a Windows 11 PC; the app then displayed promotions for McAfee and other products. Microsoft’s Windows chief said LG would immediately disable the McAfee pop-up, while LG maintained that McAfee itself was only offered with consent; it did not explain why its installer was added automatically. A highlighted $1,200 monitor reportedly fell to a one-star rating on LG’s site and was heavily discounted, and affected users can remove the app through Windows Settings.
