## Key points

- Unions and students plan an authorised Paris march.
- Yellow Vests activists plan a separate rally despite a ban.
- Protests follow strikes over the rising cost of living.

## Summary

Saturday’s protests highlight a split between unions and student groups, who plan an authorised march, and Yellow Vests activists, who intend to rally despite a ban. The separate calls for action come amid weeks of youth-led unrest and strikes over the rising cost of living.

The unions and student groups are marching in central Paris against high living costs and in support of young people. Yellow Vests activists have called for a gathering at Place de la Concorde, near parliament and the presidential palace, and urged “mass disobedience”. Earlier strikes drew hundreds of thousands of workers.
