## Key points

- Fauci declined Senate questions by invoking the Fifth Amendment.
- Rand Paul plans a committee contempt vote.
- The hearing revived disputes over COVID-19’s origins.

## Summary

Dr Anthony Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment and declined to answer questions at a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing into the origins of COVID-19 and his pandemic-era conduct. The confrontation, led by Republican chairman Rand Paul, renewed a long-running political dispute over whether the virus came from a laboratory and whether US-funded research in China was involved; Paul said the committee would consider holding Fauci in contempt.

Fauci said he acted on legal advice because he feared answers could expose him to further investigation, despite receiving a pre-emptive presidential pardon before leaving office. Paul argued the pardon meant the privilege was unjustified, questioned Fauci about research funding and gain-of-function work, and ordered his lawyer removed after an interruption; Fauci has consistently denied wrongdoing, while many scientists continue to regard natural animal-to-human transmission as the better-supported origin theory.
