## Key points

- Five live grenades were found in estate-sale boxes in Austin.
- Police secured the scene and the bomb squad destroyed them.
- Officials urged people to leave old ordnance untouched and call 911.

## Summary

An Austin resident found five live grenades, thought to date from the Second World War, in boxes bought at an estate sale. Police secured the area and called the Austin Police Department’s bomb squad, which recovered and destroyed the explosives.

The grenades appeared to be about 80 years old, though their precise age was unknown. A bomb squad supervisor said old military ordnance can remain dangerous and urged people who find it to leave it alone and call 911; the squad handles more than 400 deployments a year across a 10-county region.
