## Key points

- Democrats took control of both chambers in a rebuke to Trump.
- The author sees overreach as a key cause of the losses.
- Immigration, Iran and tariffs may have turned voters against Republicans.

## Summary

The article says Democrats’ midterm gains amounted to a sharp rebuke of Donald Trump and his first two years back in office. Its author argues that the defeat could also serve as a warning: like Barack Obama in 2010, Trump treated a presidential win as a broad mandate and pursued policies that alienated voters.

The article reports that Democrats took control of both chambers of Congress, gaining at least seven Senate seats and more than a dozen House seats, though results were still being counted. It highlights Democratic victories in Texas and Michigan, alongside Republican wins in Florida, and links voters’ discontent to Trump’s deportation drive, war with Iran, tariffs and the resulting pressure on fuel prices and inflation.
