LL Cool J Recalls Hearing That Ol’ Dirty Bastard Urinated on His Plaques: ‘Loved Him Ever Since’
LL Cool J has recounted the bizarre occasion when the late Wu-Tang Clan rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard (ODB) smashed his plaques and urinated on them at a New York recording studio. Speaking on SiriusXM's Salute the Sample on Thursday 8 July, the rapper described receiving an unusual phone call from the late music executive Chris Lighty, urging him to come down to Chung King Studios. Rather than being angered, LL said he found the episode inexplicable and endearing, telling listeners he "loved him ever since".
According to LL, Lighty told him ODB had come in and "broke all your plaques and pissed on 'em", leaving LL baffled but amused. Lighty had offered further context in a 2006 interview with Stuff Magazine, saying ODB had arrived intoxicated, grown angry when staff refused to record him in that state, and torn gold and platinum plaques from the wall before the receptionist called the police; he reportedly changed his mood entirely by the time they reached the lobby. ODB died aged 35 in November 2004 from an accidental drug overdose, while LL is preparing to host his Rock the Bells Festival at Long Island's UBS Arena on 15 August, with a line-up yet to be announced.
