The chairman of the Arlington County Republican Committee has criticised a new $50,000 taxpayer-funded assistance programme in Arlington, Virginia, which will support families of illegal immigrants whose main breadwinner has been detained or deported. Matthew Hurtt described the scheme as a "slush fund" that undermines federal immigration policy under the Trump administration and disadvantages local taxpayers, many of whom he says are conservative and oppose it. The County Board approved the plan unanimously on 2 September, framing it as support for displaced immigrant families amid a wave of recent enforcement action in the area.

Under the scheme, funds will be channelled through the nonprofit Arlington Thrive, which can distribute up to $2,000 per family to cover basic needs; Hurtt noted the group, unlike government bodies, is not bound by standard transparency rules. The initiative follows an operation in which more than 1,300 illegal immigrants were arrested across the Washington, D.C. and Virginia region over a fortnight. Hurtt accused Arlington and neighbouring Northern Virginia counties of consistently opposing Trump administration immigration policy while asking voters to approve costly bond measures for basic services, arguing this reveals misplaced spending priorities. Arlington County Democrats and the County Board had not responded to requests for comment at the time of publication.
