London mayor Lord Khan has more than tripled the length of road under Transport for London's control that is subject to 20mph speed limits, rising from 50 miles in 2021 to 166 miles by March this year, according to figures obtained by the Daily Mail under Freedom of Information laws. The expansion, part of Khan's "Vision Zero" road safety initiative, has drawn criticism from Conservatives who describe it as the latest step in Labour's "war on motorists", alongside other charges such as ULEZ, the Congestion Charge and new river crossing tolls.

The figures show nearly half of the roughly 360 miles of highway TfL controls are now 20mph zones, and when borough-controlled roads are included, more than half of Greater London's roads carry the limit. Rising enforcement has caught prominent figures including author Lynda La Plante and actor Sir Idris Elba, while nationwide police data shows drivers caught by 20mph speed cameras jumped from around 21,000 in 2023 to nearly 128,000 last year. Shadow transport minister Greg Smith called the expansion "the next, sadly predictable chapter" in what he termed Labour's war on motorists.
