A new analysis of Britain's datacentre sector shows London still dominates the market, hosting around 40% of the UK's 555 server farms and roughly two-thirds of the country's total colocation capacity. However, the report highlights a growing shift towards regional development, as operators increasingly look beyond the capital due to power shortages and planning constraints in London, with several large-scale projects now planned across other regions.

The data, compiled by electroplating firm Karas Plating, puts the UK's total datacentre IT capacity at about 1.6 GW, second globally only to the US. London leads with 219 facilities (1,048 MW) and 15 planned expansions, while the South East follows with 62 sites and the most planned projects outside London. Notably, Wales already has 154 MW of capacity from just 32 sites, and major regional schemes are in the pipeline, including a Blackstone facility near Blyth (720 MW) and a proposed 1.5 GW AI-focused campus in Devon.
