SUSE has offered voluntary separation and early retirement to eligible employees as the Linux vendor restructures its business operations. The initiative, which targets long-serving staff including those with over a decade at the company, follows a period of significant strategic shifts and workforce developments, including the unionization of staff at SUSE's Prague operation earlier this year.

Long-serving employees were approached about voluntary separation in the weeks following a company meeting held in Singapore, with no predetermined targets set for participation. The separation programme coincides with major product changes, including the removal of legacy tools from openSUSE Leap 16 and the replacement of some utilities with Red Hat alternatives, reflecting broader organizational changes triggered by the Rancher acquisition and subsequent leadership shifts within the company.
