Lorde Slams ‘Inaccurate’ Spotify AI Song Descriptions of ‘Current Affairs’: ‘We Don’t Want This’
Lorde has publicly criticised Spotify's new AI-generated "About the Song" feature after it produced an inaccurate description of her track "Current Affairs" from her 2025 album Virgin. In an Instagram Story, the singer argued that reducing songs to AI-generated interpretations at the point of listening restricts fans' freedom to form their own meaning, and she called on Spotify to let artists opt out of the feature entirely.
The disputed AI blurb claimed a specific staged moment from Lorde's Ultrasound World Tour, involving water being poured over her, occurred during "Current Affairs" — when it actually happens during a different song, "GRWM". Spotify, which launched the beta feature in February, told Billboard it draws its descriptions from articles across the internet and corrects errors quickly once flagged, but it has not said whether it will address artists' broader opt-out concerns. This is not Lorde's first swipe at AI in the music and tech space; she also criticised wearable AI technology, including smart glasses, during a festival set in Madrid earlier in July.
- Lorde says Spotify's AI song description of "Current Affairs" is inaccurate.
- She wants artists able to opt out of the AI feature.
- Spotify says it fixed the error and remains in beta testing.
