Sadiq Khan has formally joined the House of Lords, being introduced as Lord Khan of Tooting in a ceremony at Westminster, amid criticism over the prospect of him "double-jobbing" while remaining London Mayor. He was elevated to the peerage by Sir Keir Starmer as one of his final acts as Prime Minister, but concerns have been raised about a loophole allowing him to boost his income significantly by claiming Lords attendance allowances on top of his mayoral salary.

While Khan's £170,000 mayoral salary would normally be cut by two-thirds if he drew a salary as a peer, he can instead claim a tax-free daily allowance of £390 for attending Lords sittings without any reduction to his mayoral pay. With the Lords typically sitting around 150 days a year, this could add up to £58,500 to his income, and because the allowance is untaxed, it would be equivalent to a salary of roughly £280,000 – more than the Prime Minister's own pay of around £174,000. A spokesman for Khan did not deny he would claim the allowance, insisting he would continue devoting full time and energy to his mayoral duties, though aides declined to confirm whether he claimed it for the day of his introduction.
