A couple in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, were each publicly caned 100 times after being convicted of adultery under Aceh’s strict Sharia laws. The punishment, which is intended both to inflict pain and publicly shame offenders, drew attention after the woman pleaded for mercy and collapsed, while the man’s caning was briefly suspended over health concerns.
The couple were among 10 people caned on 17 September 2026. The other eight, convicted of mixing with unrelated members of the opposite sex at a birthday party, received between 16 and 21 lashes. Aceh is Indonesia’s only province to enforce Sharia law, including caning for offences such as gambling, alcohol consumption and sex outside marriage; Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch condemn the practice as cruel, degrading and contrary to human-rights obligations.
