Luis R. Conriquez’s Show at Mexican Fair Canceled Due to Alleged Glorification of Crime

Billboard · 2 hours ago

The government of the Mexican state of Zacatecas has requested the cancellation of a performance by regional Mexican music star Luis R. Conriquez at the Fresnillo National Fair, citing concerns that his songs glorify organised crime. The show, scheduled for 28 August, was pulled after officials said it did not align with local violence-prevention efforts, highlighting ongoing tensions in Mexico between authorities and the corridos bélicos genre, which often celebrates drug traffickers and cartel figures.

Zacatecas' secretary general of government, Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, sent a letter on 18 August asking Fresnillo's municipality to reconsider Conriquez's participation, and confirmed the cancellation the following day, invoking Article 190 of the state's penal code on glorifying crime. Conriquez's team said their approved setlist did not include any corridos, and the performance of fellow artist Oscar Maydón is also reportedly under review; Zacatecas has offered to help find a replacement act. This is not Conriquez's first brush with such controversy — a April 2025 show in the State of Mexico descended into chaos after he announced he would not perform narcocorridos due to a similar ban.
