## Key points

- Dončić has 308 points through eight games.
- He has scored 40 or more in five of six games.
- The Lakers are 7-2 and second in the West.

## Summary

Luka Dončić has scored 308 points in his first eight games of the season, the highest total over that span since Wilt Chamberlain scored 418 in 1962-63. His latest 40-point game helped the Lakers beat the Kings 116-103, extending a remarkable run and strengthening his early case for MVP.

Dončić had nine rebounds and seven assists against Sacramento, and has scored at least 40 points in five of his past six games. He leads the league with 38.5 points per game, while the Lakers are second in the Western Conference at 7-2. Coach JJ Redick compared this spell with Dončić’s March last season, when he averaged 37.5 points, eight rebounds and 7.4 assists as the Lakers went 15-2; a torn hamstring later kept him out of the entire post-season.
