## Key points

- Dončić’s passing turns double teams into chances for team-mates.
- He scored 42 and had 13 assists against Miami.
- The Lakers lead the league in offensive rating.

## Summary

Luka Dončić’s passing and ability to read defences are helping the Lakers turn the pressure he attracts into open shots and confident play from his team-mates. In Monday’s 138-117 win over the Heat, he had 42 points and 13 assists, while the Lakers recorded 39 assists, their most since JJ Redick became coach.

Dončić is averaging 38.3 points and 8.1 assists, and the Lakers have the league’s best offensive rating at 121.9. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra praised his ability to anticipate defensive schemes, while Giannis Antetokounmpo said Dončić’s encouragement helps team-mates attack. The Lakers, who have nine new players, are still adapting: they recently let a 25-point lead slip against the Warriors.
