M. Night Shyamalan’s 2027 Thriller Looks Like a Return to Form in First Trailer

Polygon · 10 hours ago

M. Night Shyamalan has released the first teaser trailer for Remain, a supernatural romance made in collaboration with novelist Nicholas Sparks, best known for The Notebook. The project marks an unusual pairing of styles and looks set to return Shyamalan to the mysterious, small-town supernatural storytelling that defined his early hits, following a run of divisive recent films such as Old, Knock at the Cabin and Trap.

Remain began as an original story developed jointly by Sparks and Shyamalan, with Sparks writing the 2025 novel and Shyamalan penning the screenplay and directing. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as reclusive architect Tate Gordon, who falls for Phoebe Dynevor's Wren after arriving in a coastal town, only for their romance to unravel into a darker mystery with supernatural undertones. Described as "The Notebook meets The Sixth Sense", Remain is due in North American cinemas on 5 February 2027, with international release beginning two days earlier.
