Madoka Magica’s Long-Awaited Fourth Film Will Be Released in the Biggest Format Possible

Polygon · 3 hours ago

The fourth and long-awaited film in the Puella Magi Madoka Magica series, Walpurgisnacht: Rising, will receive an IMAX release when it opens in Japan on 28 August, alongside standard cinema formats. It marks the first time a film in the subversive magical girl anime franchise has been shown in IMAX, giving fans a more immersive way to see what trailers suggest could be the series' finale.

More than 60 cinemas across Japan will screen the film in IMAX simultaneously with its regular release, with viewers able to find their nearest venue via the official Madoka Magica website. The original 12-episode anime debuted from studio Shaft in 2011 and is often likened to Neon Genesis Evangelion for its dark subversion of the magical girl genre; a film series followed from 2012, with Walpurgisnacht: Rising first teased in 2015, officially announced in 2021, and delayed multiple times since. No international release date has yet been announced.
