Variety · 2 hours ago

Magenta Light Studios has acquired U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to "The King of the Internet" ("O Rei da Internet"), a Brazilian crime drama directed by Fabrício Bittar. The film dramatises the true story of Daniel Nascimento, a teenage hacker who became one of Brazil's most notorious cybercriminals, and is being positioned as the country's Oscar submission for Best International Feature Film, with a theatrical release planned later this year.

Directed by Bittar, who co-wrote the screenplay with Vinícius Perez, the film stars João Guilherme as Daniel and Marcelo Serrado, tracing his path from a computer-obsessed youth to a skilled hacker drawn into organised cybercrime, wealth and excess, before a Federal Police operation dismantles his criminal enterprise when he is still under 17. Magenta Light Studios CEO Bob Yari and Bittar both praised the film's blend of thriller pacing and coming-of-age storytelling, and it has already screened at the Miami Film Festival's Marimbas Award competition and had its South American premiere at Bafici in Buenos Aires.
