Magic: The Gathering's Secret Lair line has created persistent friction between product scarcity and consumer access. After shifting from a print-on-demand model to limited-print runs in 2023, high-profile collaborations including the Monty Python and Goblin Storm collections sold out within hours, leaving frustrated buyers to purchase from secondary markets at inflated prices. The publisher acknowledged the systemic problem affecting its collector base.

Beginning with the Hatsune Miku commander deck release, Wizards of the Coast is introducing a 24-hour pre-order window where all purchases receive guaranteed fulfillment. Initial limited-print stock will ship on schedule, whilst orders exceeding that run will be distributed around May 2027, reviving elements of the original print-on-demand approach. The company has not yet confirmed whether subsequent releases, including a planned Stardew Valley collaboration, will adopt this mixed system.
