Major airline abandons 3 key cities as passengers face shrinking flight choices

Fox News ·

American Airlines has ended service to Santa Maria, California; Tijuana, Mexico; and Doha, Qatar, reducing flight choices for travellers in those markets. The changes leave Santa Maria without a major US legacy carrier and remove the only nonstop route between Tijuana and the US operated by a US airline.

The airline said the Santa Maria, Tijuana and Doha routes did not meet performance expectations. Allegiant Air still serves Santa Maria with flights to Las Vegas, while Qatar Airways has restored nonstop Philadelphia–Doha service. An aviation safety expert said route cancellations are a routine business decision and advised travellers to check their routes and consider alternatives, particularly for trips to the Gulf region.

  • American Airlines has dropped service to three destinations.
  • Santa Maria and Tijuana have lost key US airline links.
  • Travellers are advised to monitor routes and consider backup plans.

New here? Start with this

Airlines decide which routes to operate based on factors such as passenger demand and whether a service meets their business targets. When a route ends, travellers may need to use another airline, connect through a different airport or choose a different destination.

American Airlines is one of the largest US airlines, and its network includes domestic and international routes. Other carriers may still serve the same places, but they may offer fewer destinations or different schedules; for example, Allegiant flies from Santa Maria to Las Vegas, and Qatar Airways operates flights between Philadelphia and Doha.

These changes matter because fewer direct flights can mean longer journeys or less choice, especially for people travelling internationally. Travellers can check with airlines for current routes and consider other airports or connections when planning a trip.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

An airline can reasonably end routes that do not attract enough passengers or revenue to justify their cost; doing so helps it use aircraft and staff where demand is stronger and can support the wider network. If other airlines still serve some destinations, or alternative connections are available, the change may be a routine adjustment rather than a failure of the market.

The case against

Route cuts can leave travellers with fewer convenient choices, longer journeys and less competition, with particular effects on people who depend on a specific connection. Losing a major carrier in Santa Maria and the only nonstop US airline service from Tijuana may reduce access and resilience, even if another airline serves Santa Maria or a foreign carrier restores a route to Doha.
