Major Album Releases Tied to 15% Increase in US Traffic Deaths, Study Finds
A Harvard Medical School study has found that US traffic fatalities rise by around 15% on days when major albums are released on streaming services, a pattern researchers link to drivers becoming distracted while reaching for their phones to play new music. Published in JAMA Network Open, the research adds album releases to a small list of mass, synchronised events—alongside things like Super Bowl Sunday—that have been shown to coincide with spikes in road deaths, highlighting a distraction risk that has not previously been studied.
The study examined the 10 albums with the highest first-day Spotify streams between 2017 and 2022, including releases from Taylor Swift, Drake, Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, Harry Styles and Kanye West, drawing on 233,809 US traffic deaths recorded in that period. Comparing release dates with the surrounding 10-day window, researchers found an average of 139.1 deaths on release days versus 120.9 on other days, an increase of 18.2 fatalities, or 15.1%. Lead researcher Dr Vishal Patel said he was prompted to investigate after drifting out of his lane while searching for a new Swift album on Spotify, and noted the rise was strongest among solo, sober daytime drivers—pointing away from alcohol or release-party explanations. The authors caution that crash-database records cannot confirm phone distraction was the direct cause, and other factors may have contributed.
