Major health update on Mitch McConnell, 84, as ‘brain dead’ rumor grips DC

Daily Mail · 2 months ago

Reports indicate that US Senator Mitch McConnell, 84, is alert and conversing about political matters, contradicting an unverified rumour circulating in Washington that he is "brain dead" following his hospitalisation three weeks ago. The update matters because McConnell remains a serving senator at a time when the Republican Party is defending a very narrow Senate majority, and uncertainty over his condition — combined with his aides' silence — has fuelled intense speculation about whether he will return to work.

McConnell, the senior senator from Kentucky, was admitted to hospital on the morning of 14 June after a medical emergency at his Washington home, with paramedics reportedly responding to an unconscious person believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest. His office has never confirmed the cause, saying only that he is receiving "excellent care". GOP strategist Scott Jennings said he spoke with McConnell for nearly 20 minutes about Iran, Ukraine and a Maine political scandal, while Senate Majority Leader John Thune reportedly held a "lengthy and substantive" call with him on national security. The rumours were amplified by Trump-aligned figure Laura Loomer, who claimed an unnamed White House source described McConnell as being in a "vegetative state".
