Making Love with David Magidoff review – instant improv musical based on Fran Healy’s teenage infidelity

The Guardian · 3 hours ago

David Magidoff's improv troupe brought their format of turning a special guest's real-life romantic story into an instant musical to the Edinburgh festival, this time with Travis frontman Fran Healy as guest. Healy recounted a teenage tale of infidelity in Glasgow, which the American cast then improvised into comic scenes and songs, though the nine-strong ensemble's competing comic styles sometimes overshadowed the heart of Healy's original story.

The show opens with Healy performing two songs before sharing his droll account of a drunken teenage tryst with a girl from another part of the city, which he wrongly believed would go undetected. The improvisers then dramatised the fallout, with Kimberly Condict's performance as an overly affectionate Mrs Healy singled out as a highlight, though the review notes the piece felt more competitive than collaborative, lacking the generosity good improv requires. Despite its scattiness, the reviewer found it fun overall. The show runs at Assembly George Square, Edinburgh, until 23 August.
