A 42-year-old man from Paulsgrove, Portsmouth, has become the first person arrested over violent disorder that broke out during anti-migrant protests at Eastney Marina last Sunday. He was detained on Friday morning on suspicion of violent disorder and assaulting a police constable, after Hampshire Police said it had reviewed three-quarters of the video footage gathered at the scene and expects further arrests to follow.

More than 200 activists gathered at the marina in an eight-hour standoff, blocking the only access road to stop three coaches carrying around 120 migrants who had crossed the Channel from leaving; the crowd eventually dispersed in the early hours of Monday, allowing the coaches through. Police, coastguard and Border Force vehicles were damaged and several officers suffered minor injuries. Assistant Chief Constable Tony Rowlinson rejected claims the protest was peaceful, calling it "violent public disorder", and warned that anyone responsible for assaults, criminal damage or other offences would face robust action. The protest followed a similar demonstration the previous day at Dover, where masked men blocked port access for several hours.
