Man found shot dead in van carrying migrants at French rest stop

Daily Mail ·

A 47-year-old man was found shot dead inside a UK-registered tradesman’s van at a French motorway rest stop, where around ten migrants were also found. The discovery has prompted an investigation into the killing and possible organised migrant trafficking.

The van was found on Friday at the Champ l’Epée rest stop, about 20 miles north of Troyes and 200 miles from the Channel crossing. Prosecutors said the victim had a gunshot wound to the head and that an initial inquiry suggested shots were fired as the van parked, after which several people fled; one suspect was arrested. The driver’s nationality and the migrants’ nationalities were not confirmed, and authorities said the case would include suspected murder, weapons offences and organised trafficking-related crimes.

Many people attempt to reach the UK illegally from continental Europe each year, paying smuggling networks to arrange their passage across the Channel. These trafficking operations are run by organised crime groups profiting from migration.

Violence and deaths within smuggling networks are an ongoing concern, reflecting the dangerous conditions migrants face and the criminal nature of the organisations involved. Incidents involving injuries or fatalities typically prompt investigations into both the immediate crime and the wider trafficking operation.

France is a key transit country for migrants heading to the UK, with motorways serving as routes for smugglers moving people northward towards the Channel. Lorry parks, rest stops and other locations along these routes are frequently used by trafficking networks as staging points.
