Vance Boelter has been sentenced to two consecutive life terms plus 40 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to killing former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. The sentence means he will spend the rest of his life in prison without parole, bringing a legal resolution to an attack that intensified concerns about political violence against public officials.

Boelter, 59, admitted six federal offences connected to the shootings on 14 June 2025, including stalking, murder and firearms crimes. He also shot and critically wounded Minnesota state senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, and attempted to shoot their daughter, Hope; his June plea agreement removed the possibility of the death penalty.
