Lawyers for Luigi Mangione are due to meet federal prosecutors amid reports that they may discuss a plea agreement over the 2024 killing of United Healthcare chief executive Brian Thompson. No deal has been confirmed, but any agreement could significantly affect the separate New York state case, potentially raising double-jeopardy arguments.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all state and federal charges. He still faces two federal stalking charges, each carrying a possible life sentence without parole, after a judge dismissed two other charges in January, including one that could have led to the death penalty; his state trial is set for 8 September and the federal trial for January 2027.
